Set up email address on Outlook
Your Internet provider gives you information on your email account, but how do you setup your email address on Outlook?
Typically you are given the following information from your Internet provider:
- Your full e-mail address.
- The type of e-mail account: POP3, IMAP or HTTP.
- Your user name.
- Your password.
- The SMTP server name or address. This is the server that sends your email out.
- The POP3 server name or address. This is the server that you ask to receive your new email. Typically the SMTP and POP3 servers are the same, but not always.
Most people want to use software on their own computer to read, compose and manage their email. In this article, I'll use Outlook 2007 as an example of the mail software installed on your own computer. There are other software programs like Outlook Express or Mail on OS X but the information is relevant.
- Start Outlook 2007.
- On the Tools menu, click Account Settings.
- On the E-mail tab, click New
-
In the Add New E-mail Account dialog box (seen below), click Microsoft Exchange, POP3, IMAP, or HTTP, and then click Next.

-
Click Manually configure server settings or additional server types check box (the rest of the boxes will become grey), and then click Next.
-
Click Internet E-mail, and then click Next.

-
Under User Information, follow these steps:
-
In the Your Name box, type your full name. - In the E-mail Address box, type your full e-mail address.
- In the Incoming mail server box, type your server address. Typically your incoming server address will be mail.yourdomain.com.
- In the Outgoing mail server (SMTP) box, type the name of the outgoing e-mail server. Typically this is the same as your incoming server address.
- In the User Name box, type your user name.
-
If you click the Remember password check box to uncheck it, the password box will grey out. If you want Outlook to remember your password, type your password in the Password box.

-
-
Click More Settings to open the Internet E-mail Settings dialog box.
- Click the Outgoing Server tab.
- Click the My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication check box.
-
Leave the Use same settings as my incoming mail server radio button selected then click OK.

-
Click Next and then click Finished.
